Moving in the desert heat: a summer moving guide

From June to September, afternoon temperatures in the valley regularly pass 110°F. A summer move is completely doable. It just needs a different plan than a move anywhere else.

Start early

Book the first slot of the day. Our crews start at 6am in summer so the heavy lifting happens before the worst heat. Early moves go faster, which also keeps an hourly bill down.

Protect what the heat can damage

  • Electronics, TVs and computers: move them in your own air-conditioned car if you can.
  • Candles, crayons, vinyl records and makeup: these melt in a hot truck. Pack them separately.
  • Medications and important papers: keep them with you, never in the truck.
  • Wood furniture and leather: we pad and wrap everything, which also keeps direct sun off finished surfaces.
  • Plants and pets: never leave them in a closed vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Get the new place ready

  • Have power and AC turned on at the new home the day before.
  • Set the thermostat low before the crew arrives so the house is cool when doors are opening all day.
  • Keep water and ice handy for everyone helping.

Book ahead for the end of the month

Leases turn over at the end of every month, and summer is when many seasonal residents leave. Early-morning slots fill first, so book a week or two ahead if your date is fixed. If it isn't, ask us about same-day openings.
